Las Vegas police shoot, kill man holding woman at gunpoint

Las Vegas police shot and killed a man who was holding a woman at gunpoint in an apartment on Tuesday morning.

LVMPD officers responded to the 9200 block of West Russell Road, near South Fort Apache Road, at around 7:30 a.m. after a 911 call saying someone was pointing a gun at another person, according to Captain Ryan Wiggins with the LVMPD Internal Oversight and Constitutional Policing Bureau.

Arriving officers heard arguing coming from an apartment at the location. A woman opened the door to the apartment, and an officer saw a man pointing a firearm at her from inside the apartment, Wiggins said.

The officer then shot at the suspect, hitting him. The suspect was taken into custody, and medical personnel responded and took him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was treated for minor injuries, but was not taken to a hospital, Wiggins said.

This is the first officer-involved shooting in LVMPD’s jurisdiction in 2026. Wiggins said within 72 hours, a member of the LVMPD’s executive staff would provide additional information.

Police said no officers were injured during the shooting.

Wiggins said police did not know if the suspect fired any rounds at the time of publication, adding that more information would be given at the 72-hour briefing.

Police recommended the public avoid the area due to a large police presence and closed traffic lanes on South Rocky Hill Road.
